I’m excited to announce a 1 day photography class/workshop this fall on Saturday, October 24th. I taught photography classes for almost 20 years and I’m looking forward to getting back into helping people learn more about photography.
Photography is often divided into two parts; the technical side dealing with f-stops, shutter speeds, and ISO and the creative side dealing with composition. While this is true, the two sides don’t exist independent of each other. How you set your f-stop and shutter speed can have a profound effect on how your photograph looks and how you compose your photograph may dictate how you need to set your camera.
This workshop will provide a better understanding of how f-stop controls depth of field and how to use depth of field for creative effects; how to control motion with shutter speed and how you can use this creatively and how using ISO effects your camera settings.
This workshop will also discuss different properties of light and how light interacts with camera settings to create the photograph you want. There will also be discussion on composition and how composing a scene works with camera settings and light. This will all be discussed with an emphasis on landscape photography and creating photos that capture the beauty and wide-open spaces of the Flint Hills. Basically, this workshop will provide you a clear understanding of not only “how” to set your camera, but “why”, in relation to achieving full creative control over your images.
This workshop is designed to help the beginning and intermediate photographer bridge the technical and creative sides of photography. Participants will need a digital camera that has the ability to control settings (most do). Each participant will need to bring their camera to the workshop and ideally the manual for it, if available. The workshop will be divided into morning and afternoon classroom sessions and (weather permitting) a sunset shoot in the Flint Hills. Lunch and dinner will be provided. Participants will need to provide their own transportation to the sunset location. The workshop is being held with the Brandt House in Alma. You can register for the workshop here.
