This is another photograph from one of my recent forays into Central Kansas. I was with a group of photographers shooting at the McPherson State Fishing Lake in the late afternoon, not normally a time I would be out with my camera. The cloud cover on this particular day gave us some nice light to work with though and occasionally rays of sunlight would break through the clouds. People sometimes refer to these beams of sunlight as “God rays” which sounds a bit nicer than their technical term crepuscular rays. There were several trees along the shoreline of the lake that were just beginning to show some really nice color and I liked how the rays of light seemed to be shining down on the reddish tree on the point of the shoreline in this scene. I wish I could have made a return trip to the area to see if more red developed on the trees. I’m going to have to make sure I’m back down to this area next fall. This fall has been a nice surprise in terms of the colors, with the severe heat and drought we had this summer I wasn’t really sure what kind of fall colors we would have in the state. It looks like a lot of the color is past now and recent windy days have really done a number on the trees (my front yard is buried in leaves now!). Mother Nature will keep providing subjects to photograph though as long as I keep my eyes open to see them.
